The following information can be of help to the staff of Regional and Sub-Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres, as well as to the senior management of the National Maritime Authorities. PROJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONTINENTAL COMPONENT FOR THE GMDSS IN AFRICA.

AFTER NEARLY TWENTY FIVE YEARS SINCE THE  GLOBAL MARITIME DISTRESS AND SAFETY SYSTEM (GMDSS) HAS BEEN LAUNCHED BY THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION (IMO) THE AFRICAN CONTINENT IS STILL IN NEED OF UPGRADING SHORE BASED COMMUNICATION FACILITIES - THE MOST ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF RESCUE SERVICES UNDER THE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION FOR SAFETY OF LIFE AT SEA (SOLAS).
